Plants Toxic to Horses Are you thinking of starting a stable, fencing off some of your own land, camping, or perhaps turning some of your stock out onto pasture? This is a very good idea, and is a healthy choice for your horse...but beware! Putting your horse outside may do more harm then good should they come in contact with any type of toxic plant! Below is a list of several plants toxic to horses. Pictures, if available,
will evenutally be included. Please e-mail me if you have a photo
of any of these plants. Be warned that these are not the ONLY plants
toxic to your horse, and that any large quantities of anything, including
apples, may cause colic. If you suspect that your horse has consumed
any of the following, please notify your vet immediatly. For more information on the plant, check an encyclopedia. For more information on plants and affects on horses, there is a book called Horse Owner's Field Guide to Toxic Plants. This covers symptoms, cause of death, photographs, areas of plants, and more. Trees: 1. Red Maple. Found throughout Eastern US and Canada extending to Minnesota and Texas. 2. Eve's Necklace. Found on hillsides in Texas and sorrounding areas. 3. Golden Chain. Found in Southeastern United States. 4. Black Locust. Found in Eastern and Centeral United States. 5. Oak. Includes acorns if eaten in large quantities. Found everywhere in US and Canada. 6. Horse Chestnut. Found in wet, woody areas of southeastern US, extends up to Penn. 7. Walnut, all types. Found throughout US and Canada. 8. Chinaberry. Found in SE US. 9. Cherries, all types. Wild are especially toxic, domestic can be toxic if eaten in quantities. Found throughout US and Canada. 10. Peach. Found everywhere east of Rocky Mountains. 11. Boxwood. Found throughout US and Canada. Brush plants: 12. Kochia. Found in Rocky Mountain area, extends to centeral US and to some parts of Pacific states. 13. Saltbush. Found in US and Canada West of Mississippi. 14. Singletary Pea. Found throughout US and parts of Canada. 15. Privet. Found throughout United States and parts of Canada. 16. Hydrangea. Found throughout US except in southwestern states. Found in lower Canada. 17. Hemlock, all types. Found everywhere but Rocky Moutain areas. 18. Braken Fern. Found throughout US and Canada. 19. Dogbane. Found throughout US and Canada. 20. Broomweed. Found in Southern US and up in Rocky Mountain areas. 21. Cocklebur. Found throughout US and Canada. 22. Sneezeweed. Found throughout US and Canada. 23. Yellow Star Thistle. Found everywhere but in Great Lakes Western region. 24. Hound's Tounge. Found in Wetsren US and Canada. 25. Tarweed. Found in Southwestern US and Pacific States and on Canada's Western coast. 26. Radish. Found throughout US and Canada. 27. Corn Cockle. Found throughout United States. Clovers: 28. Alsike Clover. Found throughout United States. Harmful but not deadly. 29. Crimson Clover. Found in North Eastern United States up to Great Lakes States.

Found throughout US. 48. Larkspur. Found throughout US and Canada. 49. Marsh Marigold. Found in Northern US and Canada. 50. Monkshood. Found in US and Canada. 51. Foxglove. Found throughout US and Lower Canada. 52. Indian Paintbrush. Found in all parts of US except far northeastern and Southwestern. 53. Buffalo Bur. Found throughout US. 54. Jimson Weed. Found throughout US. 55. Nightshade, all types. Found throughout US and lower Canada. Grasses: 56. Arrowgrass. Found throughout US and Canada. 57. Dallis Grass. Found throughout US and Canada. 58. Fescue Grass. Found throughout US. 59. Johnson Grass. Found in Southeastern US. 60. Squirreltail Grass. Found in most parts of US and lower Canada. Usually not deadly but may cause injury from eating this tough grass. Should be especially avoided by more sensitive breeds, such as thoroughbreds. 61. Yellow Bristle Grass. Found throughout US. 62.
